It Ends With Us def

What’s it about?

Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all-too-human characters, It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.

Colleen Hoover was, is and always will be one of my favorite authors. I don’t know how she does it but she delivers the most heartfelt stories E-V-E-R-Y SINGLE TIME. One of the many many reasons why she’s so successful I think is that she makes her characters always so honest. I love that about her books. It feels like you see their true selves, their soul in what they say. The characters just worm their way into your heart in no time. She already tied in ‘sweet and sour’ moments in her earlier novels which were picked up by many readers afterwards (it means you share your best and worst moment of the day). In It Ends With Us Lily and Ryle have their moments of ‘Naked Truths’ where they are telling it to each other just like it is, the raw truth, without any filter, and well it just works, they delve deep in their inner selves and that in turn touched me.

Lily was such a realistic character and Colleen made me really see and understand that nothing is only a black and white situation, that you’re often in one of love and hate at the same time. She paints a realistic picture of how it’s like to live with someone you love dearly and where you have so many good moments with but then those 15 bad seconds can destroy the image you had from your father forever. It still haunts Lily to this day, when it’s not even an issue anymore, but you carry it with you of course for the rest of your life…

Colleen brilliantly inserted the sensitive subject of domestic abuse into the storyline. But above all the story is still – as always – even more about love and the lengths we go for it. It is such an emotional story that made ME cry because Lily was embedded so deeply into my heart.

It Ends With Us… four little words that hold so much power in them once you’ve read the novel.. I knew it was going to be meaningful and deep in advance but she really got to me.

I’m convinced this is a story that really only Colleen Hoover can tell in such a perfect way. It’s such an amazing and profound novel, I could re-read it right away! If you haven’t read any novel by Colleen Hoover yet, this is a perfect one to start with!

Just because someone hurts you doesn’t mean you can simply stop loving them. It’s not a person’s actions that hurt the most. It’s the love. If there was no love attached to the action, the pain would be a little easier to bear.

I’m the proud owner of a paperback copy which I paid full price. This is my honest opinion.

  1. Oh, this book broke my heart in so many ways! CoHo is also one of my favorites (ever!) and I agree that she’s a brilliant writer. Her characters always feel so honest that you can easily relate with them. Thanks for a great review, Inge! Happy reading. 😊

  2. Hmm I’ve always wanted to try Colleen Hoover but I’ve heard so many mixed reviews and there were so many books of hers that I had no idea where to start. This glowing review really piqued my interest though, especially since you claim she’s one of your favorite authors – that’s awesome! I’m really intrigued now to see just how well she writes her characters and introduces difficult subject matters.
Which book of hers do you recommend I read first?
    Amazing post, Inge ❤

    • Well except for the first 3 novels they are all standalones so you could start anywhere but why not start with this one, It Ends With Us? Personally my LEAST fav were November 9 and This Girl but all the rest is so good. Believe me when I say that I’m not so easily moved when reading a book (I did not shed a tear with They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera) and I just read one for a tour where everyone is finding it a difficult read but nothing.. well this one was very emotional for me. I hope you give it a chance cos you don’t know what you’re missing! Thank you Sophie xxx

  3. Beautiful review Inge. This one also made me cry and I loved it so much. I also really sympathized with Lily and the author’s note at the end of the book broke my heart even more.

Have you read any other books by Colleen? I would like to read something else by her. I have only read this one and November 9.

    • Really? Sounds exceptional too for you to cry over fictional characters :-).
Of course I read a few other novels. I read November 9 as well but it’s one of my least fav ones (although still enjoyable). The story didn’t flow like it should with the stop and start moments and had the build up that I wanted. But this one’s def one of my favorites now. I also really liked Maybe Someday and Hopeless (the first one that I read and I was sold after that). I think Finding Cinderella might still be free (it was a free novella at the time) too. I hope to read Without Merit this year as well :-). Whatever you choose, there are no bad choices 🙂

  4. 5stars from Inge does not happen often but when it does you better be sure it’s the real deal! 🙂 I can really tell how much this book got to you and meant to you and it’s fantastic! I love how the characters are out into situation of ‘Naked Truths’ because that has to be one of THE hardest things to do, sometimes even with a long time partner… and the storyline sound not only interesting but multilayered. It’s not just a simple love story- it seems to have so much more! 🙂

    • Well now that you mention it, it might not be very realistic to really tell someone your inner most truthful thoughts and feelings but I didn’t even realise, it felt very natural and sometimes it is easier to open up (a first time) when you think you won’t be seeing someone again in your life. The story is a complex love story, with dilemma and soul-searching. I feel very deeply for this story, it’s true and I’m happy I was able to reflect this in my review :-). Thank you Liis !
