About the author

A.L. Michael is hurtling towards the end of her twenties a little too quickly. She is the author of ‘Wine Dark, Sea Blue’, ‘The Last Word’, ‘My So Called (Love) Life’, ‘Driving Home for Christmas’, and ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’, based upon her experiences as a London barista.
Her new three book series, The House on Camden Square, starts with ‘Goodbye Ruby Tuesday’ and focuses on three friends as they try to open an arts centre in Camden, in memory of their rock star friend.

She is a Creative Therapeutic Facilitator, currently researching the power of creative writing to be helpful in recovering from eating disorders, and likes running writing workshops that link together the body and the mind. When she’s not writing, she likes yoga, trying to bake healthy treats and was a hipster before hipsters were hipster. Well, she likes Chai lattes and owns a Mac.

Chelsea Donovan is happy, yes she really made a life for herself and now she just landed a promotion at work. She actually grew up in a rundown estate but drastically changed her ways and she’s basically the success story of a bad girl turned good, getting the grades for the university of her choice and escaping the small town of Badgeley which was her plan all along. Now she has a successful job and a boyfriend who loves her. Kit is wonderful and he surprises her with tickets to Venice. Once there, out of the blue, he shows her a beautiful ring with three set stones (the past, present and future) and asks her to marry him. She says yes, not knowing that life will only get more complicated. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the movie Monster-in-Law, but this is exactly what followed. While they are in Italy, Kit wants to introduce her to his parents who are holidaying in Malcesine. Just a few days and then they will have the rest of their vacation to travel around Italy, wherever she wants to go. Or so was the plan.

The contrast between Chelsea’s background and Kit’s life could not have been bigger. His parents even have staff. It’s no wonder that Chelsea feels more comfortable with them than with his parents. But then his mother Jemima doesn’t make it a big secret either that she doesn’t find Chelsea an appropriate wife for her son. There’s the omnipresent ex that pops up too of course thanks to her. His parents do everything possible to break them up, even revealing her past that she has so carefully hidden, to Kit.

This book contained happiness and lots of wonderful drama and even though it was a joy to read, the story is certainly not only happy happy joy joy. After the initial happiness of the proposal there is a lot going wrong and it’s a big question if the differences between them are surmountable or not. I was really feeling for Chelsea throughout the story. I disliked his parents from the start and then I also started to dislike Kit because he was not taking Chelsea’s side like he was supposed to. On the contrary, he and Chelsea started to argue a lot and he was so influenced by his parents I really wanted to shake him. The guy she fell in love with seemed to have vanished and even I was wondering if she’d not be better off without him. Their differences in social class create so many problems and I felt like it wasn’t at all a certainty that this was going to be a happy ending. I didn’t really see a way out of this situation but I was happy where the author took this story and the actual outcome. Nice Day for a White Wedding is already the second book in The House on Camden Square series but can be read as a standalone and was a very engaging story.
